It's very hard to make up ground...err...water when chasing or being chased in canoes. The speeds of the boats are all very similar. Navigation, route choices, and portage speed and efficiency are where time can be gained or lost. There isn't much in terms of route choice in this paddle, but here is one extra portage/canoe-whack that might be an option.
