Meet our Co-Ed Open Teams!
These are our 3-person co-ed teams!
37 - Team Fjord
From: Toronto, Ontario
Profile: Team Fjord is making its third attempt at Wilderness Traverse, and this time they’re focused less on the clock and more on making smarter decisions. Geoff handles navigation and decision-making, Michelle keeps the team fed and tracks the steps, and Ryan provides lookout duties and general good vibes. Navigation and several of the race skills are still relatively new to them, so their goal is to recognize mistakes, think their way out of trouble, and keep learning throughout the course. They love biking, are less enthusiastic about trekking in the dark, and have already learned one important lesson: pizza at the cottage by 10 p.m. is not a winning race strategy. Third time lucky? They certainly hope so.
4 – Coureurs Des Bois
From: Kawarthas, Ontario
Profile: Coureur des Bois is a rookie four-person team from the Kawarthas, united by an unusual shared achievement: every teammate has earned Coureur des Bois Gold at the Canadian Ski Marathon. Herve Mallet is captain and speed demon, Jackson Bellamy is master paddler, lumberjack and rookie navigator, Melissa is organizer, snack queen and bear deterrent, and Candace is the walking first-aid station and another rookie navigator. Their goals are modest but meaningful: stay alive, finish if possible, and gain experience. Their secret weapon may be their ability to find the longest route possible. Paddle/portage is the favourite; abandoning the GPS is not.
38 – Flatlanders
From: Southwestern Ontario
Profile: Flatlanders is a family team from Southwestern Ontario, with Shawn navigating, Adriana handling distance and encouragement, and Natalie bringing the spirit. The main goal is to get Natalie through her first race and, at minimum, complete the Challenger Course. Biking is their favourite discipline, while trekking in the dark is not. They’re also racing alongside Flatlanders – Boyfriend Initiation, a companion team that includes two other Walkers and a boyfriend. Will the adventure scare him off? Their answer is already clear: probably not. This is as much a family adventure as it is a race.
36 – Bearly There
From: London, Ontario
Profile: Bearly There is bringing experience, research and a very specific list of finish-line rewards to Wilderness Traverse. Sean is captain and navigator, Regan is the enforcer, and Craig is the morale booster—and self-described deadweight. Their goals include the Stein, coaster and belt buckle, with a cold chocolate milk waiting as the ultimate recovery prize. They favour trekking and are less fond of portaging, but they’ve done their homework and know what they’re getting into. One fun fact says plenty about this team: their combined ages add up to 117.
These teams didn’t fill out the survey, so we took the liberty of writing a bio based on their team photo and absolutely no research, so obviously they will be highly accurate and not in any way completely made up. Ahem. Cough cough.
41 - Strategically Lost
From: Mars? Venus? Third rock from the sun?
Profile: “WT is so easy we can clear the course with our arms behind our backs” this rather ballsy declaration is backed up with the evidence of their team photo. We’re excited to watch them as they move through the course. This team is made up of Brady, Matthew and Lori.
39 – Flatlanders – Boyfriend Initiation
From: Mars? Venus? Third rock from the sun? We’re going to go out on a limb that they are (also) from Southwestern Ontario.
Profile: Two siblings and we must presume the aforementioned boyfriend. We sure hope the sibling dynamics (within this team and because they’re travelling with the Flatlanders who are MORE family) let the boyfriend come out unscathed from his initiation into WT and 24 hours adventure racing! We’ll try to catch up with them after the race to see how things went (nail biting!). This team is made up of Megan, Brett and Senan – good luck!
40 – GO Orienteering
From: Mars? Venus? Third rock from the sun? Actually, they’re from Sudbury.
Profile: Lindsay, Cameron and Allison look like they liked each other at the start! A team with some orienteering background in their pocket, this team hails from GO Orienteering – a community-driven orienteering and adventure racing club ready for some adventure in the woods.
